Why this exists

Mark Ayre
Mark Ayre

I built "Have a Chat" after losing an old friend, Mark Ayre. We met in 1986, and he'd talk your ear off if you gave him a chance. "Have a chat" was him. That's where the name for this came from. I could have called it a few other things, like "Have a Beer" or "Have a Bet", but they aren't really appropriate.

Mark had Motor Neurone Disease. Near the end, the only way he could get his words out was by spelling them out one letter at a time, pointing at a sheet with the alphabet printed on it. Even then, people sometimes struggled to understand him. He eventually chose to end his life on his own terms.

Here's the part that stays with me. There are proper communication tools out there, available through the health system, that could have helped him. He was never offered one. A lot of people aren't — by the time anyone thinks of it, the moment has often passed.

So I made this, and I'm giving it away. It's free. There's no form to fill in, no assessment to wait for, no referral needed. If it helps you or someone you love have a chat when talking is hard, then it's done its job.

For Mark.

How it works

1

Spell it

Tap letters on the big keyboard. Word suggestions help you go faster.

2

Show it

Your words appear large across the top so people nearby can read them.

3

Say it

Press speak and the device reads it aloud. Quick Yes / No / phrase buttons too.

Is it safe?

  • It's just a web page. There's no app to install from a store, nothing that can run on your device or carry a virus.
  • It stays private. Everything happens on your device. What you type is never sent anywhere — there's no account, no tracking, no server collecting anything.
  • It's completely free. No cost, no ads, no catch. Made in someone's memory, not for profit.
  • It keeps working offline. Once you've opened it once, it runs with no internet at all.
